Jordanian Prince vies for "peace through sports"

BEIJING, April 24 (Xinhua) -- Olympic Games embodies the beauty of sports, which best illustrates the idea of peace through sports, Jordanian Prince Feisal Al Hussein said here on Tuesday.

Prince Feisal Thursday launched a Jordan-based Peace Through Sport program which intended to bring together youth leaders and children from conflicting areas all over the world.

He said the coming Olympic Games filled the Chinese with enthusiasm and showed the beauty of sports.

"We have seen a lot of enthusiasm in this country. People are looking forward to the Games. The world will be coming here to learn about China, the Chinese people and their long history," said Prince Feisal, who is a member of the International Olympic Committee Women and Sport Commission.

"That's what is beautiful about sports, bringing people together," he said. "Peace Through Sport program is to bring young kids together, to unify divided communities."

A pilot program starting in October will have children from places like Iraq and Afghanistan and athletic excellence will not be attached too much importance in selecting the participants.

"They will learn how to use sports as a teaching tool, peace education, conflict resolution and how to work with kids and help them solve problems," he said.

"They will learn from each other. When they learn these skills and take them back, hopefully they can have more kids involved," he added.

The Prince is now in Beijing for the annual Sport Accord convention where he presented the program at the international sport federations' council meeting on Monday.
