(BEIJING, January 8) -- With the enthusiastic participation of more than 250,000 translation volunteers from across the globe and after four months' selection, six time-honored Beijing shops now have English Names.
After the initial and secondary selections, the English names for the six time-honored establishments are:
Quanjude Peking Roast Duck -- Since 1864;
Wuyutai Tea Shop -- Since 1887;
Tongrentang Chinese Medicine -- Since 1669
Ruifuxiang Silk -- Since 1862;
Rong Baozhai Art Gallery -- Since 1672
Wangzhihe Gourmet Food -- Since 1669
The public welfare translation campaign to give English names to old-time shops enters the second season on January 8, 2008, expecting more participation.
The campaign started in August 2007. More than 50 time-honored establishments in Beijing collected suggestions for English names from the world through the Internet. More than 250, 000 translation copies were received, 20 percent of which were from abroad.
The new English names have been well received by the time-honored establishments, and the names will be made into gold-lettered signboards. Shi Bingfeng, vice manager of Quanjude Group, said the company would consider registering and promoting the English brand.
