(BEIJING, September 13) -- BOCOG President Liu Qi has called for better prepared venue teams to ensure the success of the Good Luck Beijing sport events.
To lay a solid foundation for the 2008 Olympic Games, BOCOG (Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad) has planned a total of 42 world-class sport events for most of the Olympic venues until next may. 13 of them have been held so far.
At a meeting to assess the results of the first phase on Thursday, Liu called for an accelerated construction to deliver quality venues speedily.
The sport events organizers need to focus on better services and volunteer training, improvement of transport, environment and food safety, he said.
"We need to make better transport plans and take more effective measures after assessing the results of last month's traffic restrictions; improve weather forecasts, environmental monitoring, emergency response and security," he told officials of BOCOG and Beijing Municipality.
Liu said the operation of the Olympic venues has been satisfactory: the facilities and technologies meet the Olympic standards or are close to them;the August traffic and environment drive has met its goals; the participating delegations, VIPs, media and spectators were satisfied with the services provided to them; the management system has worked effectively and the command center has helped the venues to address a number of issues and deal with emergencies effectively.
However, Liu stressed, translation services, site signs and the power supply in some of the venues still leave something to be desired. "These problems need to be addressed," he said.
Chen Zhili, state councilor and BOCOG first vice-president attended and addressed the meeting.
