(BEIJING, September 3) -- The Beijing Institute of Technology Gymnasium will host the International Goal-ball Tournament from September 13-16, the only Paralympic event in the 2007 series of Good Luck Beijing sport events.
Some 370 volunteers went through a training course given by specialists of the China Disabled Persons' Federation on Sunday. On Tuesday they will pay a visit to the Beijing Sport Center for Disabled People to familiarize themselves knowledgeable with goal-ball, and will practice communicating with visually impaired people.
The volunteers were taught to greet the blind in a special manner: say hello or clap your hands to show your presence at a distance of two meters. "You'd better lower your voice and use body contact to let the disabled person know that you are talking to him or her," a specialist said.
"Blind people are very sensitive to unpleasant smells, so the volunteers need to take baths very often and keep their body clean," the specialist said.
The gymnasium is a renovated facility to be used for the volleyball competitions of the Olympic Games in 2008. After some modifications, it was turned into a goal-ball venue with accessible facilities, venue manager Liu Liang told the press.
